"Koinobori" Carp windsocks, decorate the landscape of Japan from April through early May, in honor of Children's Day on May 5.  In Japanese culture, the carp symbolizes courage and strength because of its ability to swim up a waterfall. 

The Koinobori are commonly flown above the roofs of houses with children, with the biggest Koinobori representing the father, next biggest representing the mother, and the smaller carp of different colors for each child in decreasing order by age.
