Abalone Shell
Approximate Size: 6"- 7"
Abalone shells are iridescent, ear-shaped marine mollusk shells known for their striking nacre, or mother-of-pearl, interiors. Found primarily along coastal waters in regions like California, Mexico, Japan, South Africa, and Australia, abalone thrive in rocky, kelp-rich environments. Their shells are valued for jewelry, decorative inlays, and spiritual practices. Many cultures use abalone in smudging rituals to hold sage, symbolizing water elements. Additionally, the mother-of-pearl is crafted into buttons, instrument inlays, and fine art. Due to overharvesting, strict conservation measures regulate abalone fishing in many areas to preserve wild populations and support sustainable aquaculture.
